Outrage in Tripura: Pradyot Debbarma Demands Probe as Kok Borok Students Face Challenge in Bengali Exam
Tripura’s Indigenous Students Face Obstacles in Kok Borok Exams as Schools Fail to Provide Assistance
In a Facebook live session on Monday, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the founder of Tipra Motha Party and a Member of the District Council, expressed his outrage at the reported lack of assistance provided to students with languages other than Bengali in understanding their Kok Borok exam questions, which were written in Bengali. Debbarma claimed that many indigenous students, who may not be able to read Bengali, were forced to submit blank papers or leave questions unanswered due to this issue.
According to Debbarma, the situation has raised concerns about the language-based barriers faced by students from non-Bengali speaking backgrounds. “It’s unfortunate that, despite the initial proposal to provide options for students to write in English or Roman script with invigilators translating Bengali questions, some schools did not implement this solution,” he stated. While some schools provided assistance to students, two to three locations were found to be lacking, highlighting the need for an inquiry into this matter.
Debbarma emphasized the importance of language in an education system, ensuring that all students have an equal opportunity to succeed. He has since instructed his MLAs to raise the issue in the upcoming assembly session, and urged students to speak up against such injustices. It is essential to address these problems immediately and come together as a community, rather than blaming each other for the situation. “Instead of blaming each other, we must stay united and raise our voices. I will personally speak to the Chief Minister, Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, to ensure that this issue is resolved,” Debbarma concluded.
With the upcoming Kok Borok board exams, the issue of language-based barriers has once again come to the forefront. As the debate continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the authorities will address the concerns of indigenous students and ensure that their voices are heard.
