Early Warning: Kidney Issues Can Kill: PGI Experts Sound Alarm on Hidden Heart Disease Risk
Lepers Warn of Global Kidney Crisis on World Kidney Day
Lucknow: The nephrology department of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) led an awareness-cum-education rally on World Kidney Day, highlighting the growing threat of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). According to Prof. Narayan Prasad, "CKD is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for over 2.4 million fatalities annually. It is now the sixth fastest-growing cause of death, and by 2040, it will become the fifth leading cause of death globally."
The alarming statistics are a clarion call for sustained efforts to tackle this silent killer. Prof. Prasad emphasized that CKD and AKI not only lead to significant morbidity and mortality in children but also result in other medical complications. The rally attracted a diverse gathering of medical professionals, including Prof. RK Dhiman, CMS Dr. Devendra Gupta, MS Dr. Prashant Agarwal, and senior faculty members of the nephrology department.
CKD and AKI pose an significant risk, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where the numbers are staggering. "In addition to CKD, AKI is a major cause of death, affecting more than 13 million people globally," Prof. Prasad added. The alarming rates of CKD and AKI underscore the imperative for widespread awareness, education, and research to address these pressing health concerns.
The SGPGI team’s initiative aims to create a ripple effect, inspiring others to join the fight against CKD and AKI. By shedding light on these issues, the medical community can mobilize collective action to mitigate the crisis. As the numbers speak volumes, it is crucial to harness global efforts to combat this growing public health threat. As the world marks World Kidney Day, the pressing need for action is clear: it is time to act to save lives and improve treatment outcomes.
