Unlocking Investment Potential: DoNER Ministry Launches 5-Member Task Force for Northeast’s Economic Growth
New Delhi, March 15: In a bid to boost investment in the northeastern states, the Ministry of Development of North East Region (DoNER) has set up a five-member task force, with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha at the helm. The decision was announced following the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) last December in Agartala, where it was decided to constitute a high-level task force on investment promotion in the region.
Comprising Chief Ministers from various northeastern states, the task force includes Meghalaya’s Conrad K. Sangma, Nagaland’s Neiphiu Rio, and Sikkim’s Prem Singh Tamang, apart from DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. The task force has been tasked with submitting its report to the NEC within six months, which will assess the existing investment ecosystem, policies, incentives, and infrastructure in the region. The report will also develop a strategic roadmap to position the region as a preferred investment destination for sectors such as agriculture, tourism, logistics, IT, and renewable energy.
The task force will identify high-potential sectors and regions within the North Eastern Region (NER) to create focused investment clusters for the promotion of sectoral hubs like agro-processing zones, tourism circuits, IT parks, and renewable energy corridors. The report will also suggest strategies to attract both domestic and international investments, with a emphasis on public-private partnerships (PPPs) and policy reforms to streamline approvals, enhance ease of doing business, and address investor concerns. "We are looking at creating a conducive environment that will appeal to investors and make NER an attractive destination for business," said a senior official from the Tripura government.
The DoNER Ministry has already hosted eight ‘Northeast Trade and Investment Roadshows’ in different parts of the country, including Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, and Kolkata, to highlight the region’s resources and potential. The last roadshow was held in Chennai, where DoNER Minister Scindia inaugurated the event and invited investors and industrialists to join the region’s transformative journey.
The Northeastern states are rich in natural resources, including coal, gas, and oil, and have immense potential for growth in sectors like IT, biotechnology, and renewable energy. With the task force in place, the region is poised to attract more investments and accelerate its economic development, making it a leading engine of India’s growth.
