Nongpoh, March 14: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) RIST-USTM Unit successfully concluded its third edition of the Prof. Barrister Pakem Memorial Sports Meet 2025, a day-long event dedicated to honoring the late educator and leader’s legacy. The event, held on Friday, aimed to recognize Pakem’s significant contributions to society and the Khasi community.

The sports meet included various competitions, such as shot put, basketball, futsal, tug-of-war, and sprint races, among others. The event witnessed a strong turnout of students from diverse backgrounds, displaying remarkable sportsmanship and team spirit. To celebrate their achievements, winners received prizes for their outstanding performances.

In their speeches, assistant education secretary Shelkitbok Kharbani and KSU North Khasi Hills District president Ferdynald Kharkamni emphasized the importance of unity and camaraderie among students, as well as the need to maintain this spirit beyond their academic journey. They also urged students to follow in the footsteps of leaders like Pakem, who dedicated his life to education and community welfare.

The KSU leaders reaffirmed their commitment to tackling pressing issues affecting the Khasi community, including illegal immigration and the push for Inner Line Permit (ILP) implementation. They stressed that these efforts were crucial not only for the community’s survival but also for the protection of their indigenous identity. Additionally, they warned against the devastating effects of drug abuse, which has ravaged many young lives and families.

The event’s closing ceremony was attended by KSU’s assistant education secretary Shelkitbok Kharbani, KSU North Khasi Hills District president Ferdynald Kharkamni, KSU RIST-USTM Unit president Richie Lyngkhoi, and other organization members. Throughout the day, students from various colleges and institutions participated in the sports meet, celebrating their school spirit and unity.

As the event concluded, the KSU leaders urged students to remain committed to their educational pursuits while nurturing their talents to make a positive impact in society. With the Prof. Barrister Pakem Memorial Sports Meet 2025 now in the books, the Khasi Students’ Union has cemented its position as a strong voice for the Khasi community, advocating for their rights and welfare.
