Empowering Transformation: A Trans Woman’s Inspiring Revival of the Gachibowli Police Station Helpdesk
In the bustling metropolis of Hyderabad, a beacon of hope emerges for the transgender community at the Gachibowli police station, thanks to the relentless efforts of transgender counselor Tushti Pinky. Originally from Bhadrachalam, Telangana, Pinky’s journey from a Bachelor of Commerce graduate to a pivotal figure in community counseling is nothing short of inspiring. Her dedication has revived the dormant transgender help desk, offering solace and guidance to those in dire need. The Vikalp Centre, a new initiative orchestrated by the Cyberabad police in conjunction with the Prajwala Foundation, reignites hope for the transgender community. Once the country’s first help desk for transgender issues, it had unfortunately become inactive until Pinky breathed new life into it.
Under Pinky’s leadership, the help desk resumed operations in February 2025 in a climate marked by rising crimes such as extortion and prostitution in regions like Allapur, Madhapur, Kukatpally, and Gachibowli. Since then, over 40 transgender individuals rescued from such perils have received counseling. The empathetic presence of Pinky, a trans woman herself, has fostered an environment of trust and openness. “Community members feel comfortable sharing their challenges when they see someone who truly understands their journey,” Pinky explains, highlighting the value of representation in counseling.
Before joining Vikalp in August 2024, Pinky spent eight years supporting transgender rights at another NGO, earning a modest ₹8,000 per month. Her impactful work in Meerpet paved the way for the revival of the Gachibowli center. Now earning ₹20,000 per month, she manages a demanding schedule that aligns with police rescue operations, working primarily at Meerpet from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. and at Gachibowli from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Despite the grueling hours and extensive travel, Pinky finds fulfillment in her work, counseling three to four individuals daily and aspiring to recruit additional transgender counselors for the Gachibowli help desk.
Pinky’s role extends beyond counseling; she participates in training sessions that empower rescued individuals to lead independent lives. These sessions cover job interviews, personality development, and financial literacy, addressing gaps in personal and professional skills. Yettam Sanjeevulu, who oversees the center, emphasizes the comprehensive approach: “Training encompasses everything from dressing sense to technical knowledge and career planning.” The educational backgrounds of the rescued individuals are diverse, with many holding degrees but forced into prostitution due to a lack of sustainable career opportunities.
Support for the initiative is growing, as Cyberabad Women and Children Safety Wing DCP Srujana Karnam notes increased interest from IT companies in offering roles in security, maintenance, and even technical positions. Among the 40 people rescued so far, several are preparing for interviews or considering entrepreneurship. Pinky’s mission is clear: “We aim to make the transgender community aware of available opportunities and instill the confidence they need to secure a stable future.”
