Assam’s Part-Time Teachers Face Job Crisis: AASU Seeks Solutions

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to resolve the ongoing job crisis of part-time teachers in polytechnic institutions across the state. In a letter, the student body demanded a humanitarian approach to regularize the employment of long-serving part-time teachers, who have been serving in various institutions for years but now face termination.

According to AASU, these teachers have made significant contributions to the academic and administrative functions of polytechnic institutions, and abruptly removing them without providing any provisions for their future would be unfair. "These teachers were appointed through a transparent process based on merit and qualifications. Many have now exceeded the age limit for new job applications, and terminating them without a fair policy would be inhumane," stated the student body.

The issue has been ongoing since 2017, when 300 faculty members were recruited to polytechnics and engineering colleges on a part-time basis. While some were later absorbed, others resigned, and a few secured government jobs under Regulation 3F. A Gauhati High Court verdict in 2019 ruled that contractual teachers cannot be regularized by the government.

In a press conference, Chief Minister Sarma acknowledged the issue, stating that he was trying to find a solution. "Three new polytechnics will be set up at Hajo, Majuli, and Tingkhong, and eligible teachers could be absorbed on a part-time basis, depending on the number of vacancies. They will have to appear for an exam, and if necessary, we will condone their age," he said.

AASU has warned that sudden job losses could push many families into severe distress and is urging the Chief Minister to intervene and ensure a just resolution to the crisis. The student body’s concerns have resonated with many, who see this issue as a matter of humanitarian concern.

The ongoing saga highlights the plight of part-time teachers in Assam, who have dedicated years to their work but now face uncertain futures. As the debate continues, only time will tell if the Assam government will take steps to address the concerns of these dedicated educators and find a lasting solution to this pressing issue.
