Fiery Confrontation: Andy Beshear Strongly Condemns Gavin Newsom Over Steve Bannon Podcast Appearance
In a sharp critique, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed strong disapproval of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to feature Steve Bannon on his newly launched podcast. Beshear, a prominent Democrat and potential contender for the 2028 presidential race, stated Bannon’s history of promoting divisive rhetoric should not be amplified “on any platform ever, anywhere.” Beshear made these comments ahead of addressing House Democrats at a planning retreat in Northern Virginia.
Beshear acknowledged the value in engaging with diverse perspectives, asserting, “Governor Newsom bringing on different voices is great. We shouldn’t be afraid to talk and to debate just about anyone.” However, he warned against giving airtime to Bannon due to his inflammatory ideologies, which he believes fuel hatred and violence. This disagreement highlights a broader debate within the Democratic Party about platforming controversial conservative figures.
Newsom, also a likely 2028 presidential prospect, has sparked controversy by hosting Bannon and Charlie Kirk, head of the conservative network Turning Point USA, on his podcast. Former Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger, a notable critic of former President Trump, slammed Newsom’s decision as “insane,” stating that many conservatives, including himself, sacrificed their careers to challenge figures like Bannon and Kirk.
Defending his podcast choices, Newsom conveyed the importance of understanding right-wing strategies and the potential impacts of Trump-era policies. “I think it’s critically important for us to understand how the MAGA-right organized itself during the last election and what they are thinking about in the weeks, months, and years ahead,” Newsom wrote to his supporters. This legislative veto, later overridden, was part of Beshear’s advocacy for the rights of transgender athletes, spotlighted when the legislature’s actions impacted a middle-schooler who faced hurdles simply to participate in field hockey. Emphasizing empathy, he remarked, “Surely, we can see some humanity and some different perspectives in this overall debate.”
Despite his criticisms, Beshear admitted to not having listened to Newsom’s podcast episodes in full, quipping, “I haven’t yet. Don’t tell him that.”
