India’s Union Ministry of Education has ordered action against the Director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Rohtak, Dheeraj Sharma, over allegations of misappropriation of funds. According to sources, the Ministry has asked Sharma to either be suspended or be placed on leave until the completion of the ongoing probe, which aims to investigate the alleged irregularities.
The probe, to be led by Director of IIM Mumbai, Professor Manoj Tiwari, will focus on the financial health of the institution, with specific concerns over the director’s salary, as well as the qualifications of staff members. The investigation will also assess the credibility of educational certificates, including Sharma’s own degree certificate. The inquiry is backed by the findings of a report by the Principal Chief Controller of Accounts, Ministry of Education, which revealed grave misappropriation of public funds during Sharma’s tenure as Director.
The Ministry has also instructed Sharma to stay away from the IIM campus and rented areas until further notice. This comes as a result of the complaints made by the Ministry and the ongoing inquiry, which found irregularities in the way funds were handled. Instead, the Director has been asked to hand over the charge of the institution to another faculty member who has no involvement in the financial matters of the institute.
The decision to impose these measures was made by the Union Education Minister, Droupadi Murmu, who ordered the inquiry into the alleged irregularities. The probe is expected to be completed within three months. The Ministry has also requested the IIM Board to cancel the re-appointment of Neeraj Kansal as a member of the Board of IIM Rohtak, as previously scheduled.
The move is seen as a significant step in the fight against corruption in India’s educational institutions. The allegations levelled against Sharma have raised concerns about the financial health of the institution and the accountability of its top officials.
