Heartfelt Farewell: Celebrating the Impactful Legacy of Inspirational Dalit Activist K.K. Kochu
Veteran Dalit activist, thinker, and celebrated writer, K.K. Kochu, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2025, in Kottayam, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to the Dalit advancement movement in Kerala. Born on February 2, 1949, in Kallara, Kottayam district, Kochu had been an enduring figure in the fight for Dalit rights and was lauded for his roles as a writer, orator, and public intellectual.
Kochu had been battling cancer and was undergoing treatment at Kottayam Medical College prior to his passing. His contributions to literature and activism made a lasting impact on society, earning him numerous accolades over the years. Among these, the 2021 Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award stands out, honoring the breadth and depth of his written works. His autobiography, “Dalithan,” is esteemed as a landmark in Dalit literature, and he authored several other influential books, including “The Distance to Buddha” (Buddhanilekkulla Dooram), “A History Lesson for Nationalism,” “Kerala History and Social Formation,” “The Time Without the Left,” and “Riot and Culture.”
A resilient figure in Kerala’s social landscape, Kochu’s journey into activism found early roots during his student years. He was imprisoned for 16 days during the Indian Emergency period and subsequently went underground for six months, signaling his lifelong commitment to challenging systemic injustices. His career also saw him working with the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) as a clerk beginning in 1977, before retiring as a senior assistant in 2001.
Aside from his literary contributions, Kochu played an instrumental role in various activist circles. He led several organizations, including the Communist Yuvajana Vedi, the People’s Workers’ Union, and the Manushyavakasha Samithi (Human Rights Committee). In 1986, he advanced to become a Central Committee member of the Zedian organization and also served as the editor of Zedian weekly, guiding the discourse on critical issues concerning Dalit rights and social equality.
Recognizing his relentless efforts to champion the rights of Dalits across India, Kochu received heartfelt tributes from various quarters. M.V. Govindan, State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), expressed condolences, remembering Kochu for his unwavering dedication to documenting and advocating for Dalit rights. Govindan remarked, “His work was a testament to the power of words in enacting social change and challenging narratives of discrimination.”
K.K. Kochu’s demise marks the end of an era in the Dalit movement, leaving a void in Kerala’s social and literary arenas. As the community mourns the loss, Kochu’s legacy endures through his seminal works and the movements he touched and nurtured.
