Mauritius Celebrates National Day with India’s Prime Minister as Chief Guest

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the National Day celebrations of Mauritius as the Chief Guest at Champ de Mars, Mauritius, marking a significant milestone in the bilateral partnership between the two nations. The President of Mauritius, Dharambeer Gokhool, bestowed the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean on Mr. Modi, a testament to his outstanding contributions to the India-Mauritius partnership. This prestigious honor is reserved for individuals who have made a substantial impact on the nation, and Mr. Modi is the first Indian to receive this highest civilian award.

During his two-day visit, Prime Minister Modi held delegation-level talks with Mauritius’ Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, to review key areas of their bilateral partnership. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to upgrading ties to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership, a move that will strengthen their relationship in various aspects, from trade to security cooperation.

The Prime Ministers also e-inaugurated 20 High-Impact Community Development Projects and an India-assisted Area Health Centre, which will significantly improve healthcare and grassroots infrastructure in Mauritius. These initiatives will have a direct impact on the daily lives of Mauritians, providing them with better access to essential services and facilities. Additionally, eight Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged between the two nations, covering areas such as financial crime prevention, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), public service capacity building, maritime security, and local currency trade. A navigational chart of St. Brandon Island was also handed over, highlighting the cooperation between the two countries in this domain.

Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s commitment to Mauritius’ development by announcing support for the second phase of the High-Impact Community Development Projects and the construction of a new Parliament Building for Mauritius. This demonstrates India’s long-term investment in the nation’s growth and development. The Prime Ministers jointly inaugurated the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation in Mauritius, which will serve as a hub for learning, research, and public service.

In a personal capacity, Mr. Modi offered prayers at the revered Ganga Talao and immersed holy water from the Triveni Sangam at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, reflecting his spiritual affinity and connection with the Ganga River. This personal gesture highlights the strong emotional bond between the Prime Minister and the Ganga, a symbol of India’s spiritual heritage.

As Mr. Modi concluded his two-day state visit to Mauritius, he has left an indelible mark on the nation’s history, reinforcing the strong ties between the two countries. This visit has further solidified India’s commitment to Mauritius, demonstrating its interest in the nation’s development and growth, as well as its willingness to work together in addressing global challenges.
