Celebrating a Life of Adventure: Farewell to 26-Year-Old Odisha Man Killed in Tragic Hampi Incident
A 26-year-old Indian man, Bhibas Nayak, was killed in a tragic incident in Karnataka’s Koppal district, leaving hundreds of people gathered at his funeral in Odisha’s Kandhamal district to bid farewell. Credit: Twitter @Ajay Nayak, Bhibas’s uncle, received the body and learned from local police that Bhibas was killed while trying to stop three construction workers, allegedly under the influence of illegal substances, from raping two women, including an Israeli national.
A postgraduate in finance and administration, Bhibas had a passion for traveling, trying new experiences, and making new friends. His cousin, Firoz Pradhan, shared, “He used to go on four-five trips every year.” Firoz also remembered his enthusiasm for learning, recalling that Bhibas once expressed interest in learning how to swim.
The incident occurred on March 6, when Bhibas and his friends, including five people from India and abroad, were on a trip to Hampi, a cultural and historical site in Karnataka. The group was allegedly attacked by three construction workers, who pushed the men into a canal and gang-raped the two women. All five accused have been arrested, according to Karnataka Police.
Bhibas worked in the administrative department at St Stephen’s Hospital in Delhi and had a degree in business management from Madras Christian College, Chennai, and a master’s degree in finance and administration from the Bombay Stock Exchange Institute in Mumbai. His father, Bijay Kumar Nayak, is the 16th Moderator of the Church of North India and Bishop of the Diocese of Agra. Bhibas was the younger of two siblings.
As the family and friends mourn his loss, they are demanding an impartial investigation into the incident. The authorities have recovered Bhibas’s body, and an inquiry is underway to unravel the tragic events that led to his death.
