Nagaland’s Historic Budget of Rs 24,699.83 Crore Clears Legislative Hurdle with Near Unanimous Support
The Nagaland Assembly has approved a whopping Rs 24,699.83 crore budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, presented by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who also heads the finance department. The budget was passed via voice vote, with members approving the grants for 82 departments, setting the stage for an anticipated 2025-26 financial year.
The budget promises to bring in several new initiatives, including the Skill Mission, aimed at training 5,000 youth in self-employment and private-sector employment, with a focus on emerging industries. Another notable initiative is the Living Morung Initiative, designed to revive and preserve Naga culture and traditions. The Solar Power Mission aims to address the state’s energy deficit, while the Drone Training Centre will provide job-linked training in drone technology for youth.
The budget also prioritizes infrastructure development to facilitate bank branch expansion in unbanked blocks, introducing the Chief Minister’s Fellowship Programme to develop future leaders, and launching a fleet of 40 buses to boost public transportation. Additionally, efforts will be made to fast-track development in interstate border areas.
On the concluding day of the session, NLA Speaker Sharingain Longkumer praised the budget as one of the most holistic, signifying a resurgent and transformed Nagaland in the coming days. He commended Chief Minister Rio and his council of ministers for a “far-sighted budget” that demonstrates their sincerity towards the people.
As the session came to a close, Longkumer announced the formation of various financial and non-financial committees of the Assembly, as well as the panel of chairpersons for 2025-26, before adjourning the House sine die.
