NH-15: The Highway of Nightmares – A Descent into Chaos and Destruction
Highway of Hell: National Highway 15 in Assam’s Lakhimpur District Plagued by Accidents and Crime
The 104-kilometer stretch of National Highway 15, connecting Hawajan to Gogamukh in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, has become a perilous route for travelers, with reports of frequent accidents, reckless driving, and criminal activity. The double-lane road, which also serves as a major route for traffic heading to neighboring Arunachal Pradesh, has been plagued by poor road conditions, increased traffic, and hazardous driving practices.
Tragedy struck on Thursday night when Ubaidur Rahman, 25, lost control of his motorcycle, crashing and succumbing to his injuries in the curve of NH-15 at Gagaldubi in Bogeanadi. On the same day, a bus carrying 37 passengers, including a wedding party, skidded off the highway, injuring several people after hitting an electric pole in Naryana’s Nagayan area.
In another incident, a truck rammed into two vehicles on NH-15 in Ohaat Division, injuring two pedestrians, with the driver of the truck, identified as AS01 JC 4854, arrested at Boogeenadi. On March 4, a dacoity was reported at Makowari, Narayanpur, where a miscreant snatched Rs 30,000 from an elderly woman, Banti Borah, and stole her scooter, leaving her and her attendant shaken.
The road, which has become increasingly unmotorable at various sections, including the stretch from PTC gate to Banderdewa-Itanagar tri-junction, has also witnessed a spate of accidents in recent days. The National Highway Authority of India and state authorities are in dire need of urgent repair and maintenance work to address the deplorable state of the highway.
Experts believe that effective traffic management by the police and stricter enforcement of traffic laws are also essential to curb the alarming rate of accidents and criminal activities on the highway. The concerned public in Lakhimpur district echoes this sentiment, demanding immediate action to put an end to the chaos and restore the highway to its former glory.
In the words of a concerned citizen, "The highway has become a thoroughfare of terror, where lives are lost and fortunes are stolen. It’s high time the authorities wake up to the gravity of the situation and take concrete steps to restore safety and order to the highway." As the people of Lakhimpur district continue to face grave concerns over the state of their highway, the onus lies on policymakers to take swift action to revamp the dilapidated road and restore the semblance of normalcy to the region.
