Rescued Cows Find Safe Haven: ARD Minister Sudhangshu Das Announces Wide-Scale Goshala Expansion
AGARTALA, TRIPURA: GOVERNMENT URGES ACTION ON ANIMAL WELFARE, ANNOUNCES INITIATIVES
Agartala, March 6, 2025: The Animal Resource Development (ARD) Minister, Sudhangshu Das, has announced a series of measures aimed at enhancing animal welfare in Tripura. At a state-level seminar on Animal Welfare Acts, Laws, and Rules, held at Pragna Bhavan, Minister Das outlined plans to address pressing concerns.
The ARD Department has initiated the establishment of ‘Goshalas’ in all eight districts, specifically to house cows rescued from illegal transportation. These facilities will ensure the proper care and well-being of these animals. Moreover, the department has proposed the creation of a wing for the cremation of ownerless animals and birds, with the phased deployment of teams across the state. This initiative will address the gap in animal welfare, ensuring dignified treatment after an animal’s passing.
Das also emphasized the importance of dairy development, urging the Dairy Development Board to establish dairy sectors in all eight districts. This move is expected to boost milk production and generate employment opportunities for the youth. Notably, Tripura’s 98% population consumes meat, but the state lags behind in milk and egg production. To address this, mini-hatcheries will be set up in the districts, capitalizing on the immense market potential and providing jobs for the unemployed.
The minister stressed the need for collective action to prevent animal cruelty, highlighting the importance of creating awareness among the public. Several organizations, including K-NINE, Pawsome, and Dhyan Foundation, are already working in this regard. Das called for increased support from the society to further this cause.
ARD Secretary Deepa D Nair perpetuated concerns over the rising animal cruelty, despite existing laws like the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1960) and the Wildlife Protection Act (1972). Better awareness, inclusion of animal welfare in school curricula, and a unified enforcement agency are necessary, she emphasized.
Other notable attendees at the seminar, including AMC Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, AMT Riders Association President Biswajit Shil, and Dr. Neeraj Kumar Chanchal, Director of ARD, echoed the minister’s sentiments, underscoring the significance of awareness and inclusive measures to foster coexistence between humans and animals.
In conclusion, the seminar aimed to devise and implement effective solutions for animal welfare in Tripura, with the minister urging government officials, law enforcement personnel, and the public to join forces in ensuring the well-being of animals in the state.
