Background and Qualifications
Deity H Majaw, who represents the Laitumkhrah-Malki constituency, is a resident of Nongshilliang, Malki. She has completed her BA LLB and LLM, has been a practicing advocate for ten years, and is a former member of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women. She is also the president of the VPP women’s wing.
Aibandaplin F Lyngdoh, who represents the Mylliem constituency, hails from Lawsohtun. She did her schooling from Laban Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, studied at Lady Keane College for a brief period, and completed her Master of Divinity in 2017 from Luther W. New Jr. Theological College, Dehradun. She is a member of the VPP State Executive Committee.
Priorities and Objectives
Speaking to reporters, Majaw emphasized her commitment to creating an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) within the council. She noted that despite directives from the apex court, the council has yet to establish such a committee. "We are yet to have such a committee in the council. The women employees of the council can lodge a complaint before the ICC if there is any sexual harassment case in the workplace," she said.
Majaw also expressed her priority to empower women and ensure their safety, stating, "As a matrilineal society, we are in a better position as compared to women in other parts of the country. But if there is a law, we need to implement it for the safety of our women."
As the elected MDC, she intends to contribute towards women’s empowerment and ensure their safety, adding, "If members of the EC reach out to me, I will provide legal opinion within my legal capacity."
Empowering Khasi Women
Lyngdoh credited the VPP leadership for giving women a platform in electoral politics, stating, "It is due to the faith of the party leadership that we got four women party MDCs (two each in KHADC and JHADC)."
As the E.M. of the new EC, she vowed to uplift the socio-economic condition of Khasi women and enable them to stand on their own feet. She plans to provide handholding to young, educated, and talented women, acknowledging their hard work and resilience. "Many single mothers are able to give good education to their children. We can see their children are doing well in life," she said.
