FSSAI Unveils Game-Changing ‘Bold’ Food Labelling Reforms for Packaged Foods – Northeast News

Health enthusiasts can now celebrate a new era of transparency in food labelling. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has revised nutritional labelling norms to better inform consumers about critical dietary components. Packaged food items will now prominently display key information on total sugar, salt, and saturated fat in bolder and larger fonts. This change, approved during FSSAI’s 44th Food Authority meeting, is a pivotal step towards educating consumers and encouraging healthier dietary choices.

FSSAI aims to enhance visibility of nutritional components, allowing consumers to make informed decisions regarding their food intake. The revised regulations mandate that nutritional information include clear percentages of Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for total sugar, saturated fat, and sodium content per serving size. “This initiative underscores FSSAI’s commitment to combatting the rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and advancing public health goals nationwide,” stated Apurva Chandra, FSSAI Chairman.

Draft notifications for these amendments will soon be open to public feedback, inviting suggestions and objections to ensure broad-based stakeholder engagement. FSSAI continues to issue advisories aimed at curbing misleading claims in food labelling, promoting transparency and consumer trust in the marketplace. The decision-making process involved senior officials from various ministries, industry associations, consumer organisations, research institutes, and farmers’ organisations, illustrating a collaborative approach towards a healthier future for consumers.

This is not the first time FSSAI has pushed for transparency and standardization. Recently, it directed e-commerce platforms to remove terms like “Health Drink,” which lack definition under the FSS Act 2006 and its associated regulations. Food Business Operators (FBOs) were also mandated to eliminate “100% fruit juices” claims from labels and advertisements of reconstituted fruit juices. Additionally, the use of terms like wheat flour and refined wheat flour has been prohibited.

FSSAI’s continued efforts reflect a steadfast commitment to improving public health and nutritional awareness, marking significant progress in the regulation of food labelling and consumer protection.
