Unifying India: One Nation, One Election, A Beacon of Hope for a Stronger Democracy

One Nation, One Election: A Blessing in Disguise for India?

The recent Atlas on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, released by the Election Commission of India, has revealed that Indian candidates spent an average of Rs 57.23 lakhs on campaigning. This staggering figure has sparked concerns about the exorbitant costs of running a democratic system. In an effort to streamline the electoral process and curb expenses, the Indian government’s bold initiative, "One Nation, One Election" (ONOE), is gaining momentum. But is it a panacea for India’s electoral woes?

In a country where elections are held almost every month, the concept of "Model Code of Conduct" is crucial to ensuring fair and free polls. However, this measure comes with a price – the suspension of development programs and activities in states undergoing elections. For instance, the 2017 general elections led to a 7-month hiatus in development initiatives, causing public investment to stall and funds to become trapped in a cycle. The security forces, schools, and administrative systems are also overburdened, with police, teachers, and officers diverted from their duties to manage the electoral process.

The introduction of ONOE aims to rectify these issues. According to a study commissioned by the government, this reform could boost the GDP by 1.5% and add 4.5 lakh crores to the country’s GDP – roughly half the annual health budget and a third of the education budget. Simultaneous elections would also lead to a 1% decrease in inflation, an 18% increase in government expenditure, and a 0.5% rise in investment.

Despite the potential benefits, several concerns need to be addressed. Firstly, there is a risk of national narratives overshadowing regional voices, necessitating a carefully crafted plan to balance competing interests. Secondly, ONOE must ensure accountability to the people, balancing efficiency with transparency. Thirdly, the implementation of ONOE in states ruled by opposition parties remains uncertain.

The ONOE bill, although contentious, has the potential to revolutionize India’s electoral landscape. The government’s confidence in its potential to boost the economy and improve governance is unwavering. As the biggest reform in India’s electoral history, ONOE deserves scrutiny and conscientious analysis. Will it emerge as a blessing in disguise for India? Only time will tell.
