Conrad’s Urgent Call for Climate Justice: Empowering Change Amidst the Global Warming Crisis
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has advocated for climate justice, emphasizing that those least responsible for climate change are disproportionately affected by its impacts. Addressing the Climate Investments Coalition for the Global South in New Delhi, Sangma highlighted the need for global climate policies to account for vulnerable communities. He stressed that climate change is a justice issue, affecting those with minimal contribution to the problem.
Meghalaya has put forward its commitment to conservation, notably promoting traditional ecological knowledge and sustainable practices among its communities. However, the state’s environmental track record raises questions, as deforestation, river pollution, and extractive activities continue to endanger its ecosystems. Recent data shows the state lost 84.07 square kilometers of forest from 2021 to 2023, contributing to a concerning trend in the ecologically critical Northeast region. Since 2001, Meghalaya has seen the loss of over 73,000 hectares of tree cover, resulting in significant CO₂ emissions.
Despite these challenges, the state has embarked on initiatives like the Khasi Hills Community REDD+ Project, highlighting its efforts toward sustainability. The erratic monsoon patterns have further exacerbated agricultural and livelihood challenges, underscoring the impact of climate change.
The Climate Investments Coalition event, held in collaboration with National Law University, Meghalaya, provided a forum to discuss climate finance and green investments, showcasing Meghalaya’s sustainable development model for others facing similar issues. However, balancing development with ecological conservation remains a critical issue for Meghalaya. The state must enforce stricter conservation laws, foster local participation, and ensure economic activities align with long-term sustainability goals to bridge the gap between policy and practice.
Without decisive action, the disparity between Meghalaya’s environmental rhetoric and reality will persist, raising vital questions about the state’s ecological future.
