Astounding 72% Voter Turnout: Triumph and Tension Mark ADC Elections in JH
In the recent elections for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), voter turnout figures were reported at 72.45% and 82.73%, respectively. While voting was largely peaceful, the JHADC polls experienced sporadic violence with attacks on polling stations that led to damage of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in the Musniang-Rangad and Bataw-Lakadong constituencies. This resulted in repolling being ordered for four polling stations, which will take place on Saturday.
In KHADC territories, the Nongspung-Sohiong constituency boasted the highest voter turnout at 86.07%, whereas Jirang had the lowest at 51.46%. In JHADC, the Moodymmai-Nongkroh constituency led with a 90.8% turnout, while Jowai-North recorded the lowest at 75.21%. Authorities responded promptly to the vandalism incidents by tightening security and deploying additional forces, though no arrests were made as the perpetrators remain unidentified.
The city appeared unusually deserted due to a holiday declared for the elections, with schools, colleges, and various offices closed, allowing voters to return to their constituencies. Notably, Ri-Bhoi district saw lower voter engagement, with an overall turnout of 56.91%.
In the South West Khasi Hills District, voter participation was strong, recording an overall turnout of 81.5%. Ranikor and Mawkyrwat constituencies reported about 83% and 80% turnout, respectively. The election process in this district was conducted smoothly with only minor technical issues reported and promptly addressed.
Overall, the elections determined the fate of 272 candidates across the two councils, with the vote counting scheduled for February 24. Despite isolated incidents, the elections proceeded with the support of law enforcement, ensuring a secure environment for voters.
