New Delhi, February 21 (IANS) – Jammu and Kashmir’s integration into India has been a determined effort despite ongoing challenges. Since the late 1980s, Pakistan has fueled unrest in Kashmir to further its own narrative internationally. In response to heightened cross-border terrorism and disinformation campaigns, the Indian Parliament adopted a firm resolution on February 22, 1994, affirming Jammu and Kashmir’s status as an inseparable part of India. This move undermined Pakistan’s portrayal of the region as an incomplete aspect post-partition and emphasized India’s sovereignty, which is non-negotiable, even over the regions under Pakistan and China.
The resolution condemns Pakistan’s support for insurgency, outlining its role in training militants and facilitating their infiltration into India. It highlighted Islamabad’s sustained efforts to create destabilization in the region and rejected Pakistan’s actions as violations of international norms, specifically breaching the Simla Agreement aimed at resolving disputes diplomatically.
India’s parliamentary resolution firmly stated that Jammu and Kashmir "has been, is, and shall be an integral part of India," asserting its readiness to counter any challenges to its territorial integrity. A key demand was for Pakistan to vacate the territories occupied since 1947-48, a stance supported by the historic Instrument of Accession. The resolution called out Pakistan’s cession of the Shaksgam Valley to China as unlawful, further complicating the territorial disputes.
Central to India’s concern is Pakistan’s ongoing human rights violations in Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK), which the resolution condemns, asserting India’s commitment to reunification and regional stability. With India’s global influence rising, driven by economic growth and assertive policies, the retrieval of POJK appears increasingly attainable. Indian officials express confidence in achieving full integration, shifting focus from ‘how’ to ‘when’.
