Chaos Erupts in Assam Assembly: Fury and Tension as MP Rakibul Hussain Attacked, Session Halted
On February 21, the Assam Assembly was engulfed in chaos following an attack on Congress MP Rakibul Hussain in Nagaon district. The assembly session was disrupted as opposition Congress MLAs vehemently protested the incident, prompting Speaker Biswajit Daimary to adjourn proceedings twice within the first half-hour.
The turmoil erupted when Leader of Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, sought an adjournment motion at the start of the 9:30 a.m. session, which was ultimately denied. Saikia criticized the chief minister for failing to express regret or apologize for the attack on Hussain. The Dhubri MP was assaulted by unknown assailants, who wielded cricket bats and had their faces concealed, as he traveled on a two-wheeler to a party meeting in Gunomari village. Although Hussain emerged unscathed, his personal security officers sustained minor injuries.
Speaker Daimary cited the day’s agenda, which included a discussion on the finance bill, as the reason for rejecting the adjournment motion. In response to the opposition’s allegations of governmental inaction, Minister Pijush Hazarika assured that the attackers had been identified and measures were being taken. This assurance, however, did not placate the agitated Congress members, who then stormed into the Well of the House, resulting in a cacophony of protests.
Adding to the disorder, BJP legislators retaliated by reminding the opposition of similar unchecked assaults during the Congress-led administration. The persistent uproar obliged the Speaker to briefly suspend the session twice, first for 10 minutes, and then, upon reconvening, for an additional five minutes, as the Congress demanded further discussion on the issue.
Despite the tension, the altercation underscored the ongoing political strife in the Assam Assembly, reflecting deeper partisan divisions exacerbated by incidents of violence against political figures.
