Shocking Update: Google Pay Unveils New Convenience Fee for Effortless Utility Bill Payments
GUWAHATI: Google Pay has introduced a convenience fee on utility bill payments, aligning with other digital payment apps like Paytm and PhonePe. This new fee applies to transactions involving electricity, water, and LPG cylinder bills when paid using credit or debit cards.
The convenience fee ranges from 0.5% to 1% plus GST, depending on the transaction amount. However, payments made through UPI-linked bank accounts remain exempt from such charges.
According to Google Pay’s Pay Bills support page, users can still pay bills for mobile, television, electricity, water, and gas, but will incur a convenience fee when using credit, debit, or RuPay cards. The exact fee is disclosed to users before they complete the transaction, ensuring transparency.
Google Pay has also mentioned that these fees might be adjusted in the future, with updated charges reflected at the time of payment. Additionally, a possible platform fee could be introduced for certain bill payments via UPI, credit, debit, or RuPay cards. If applicable, this fee will be displayed alongside the convenience fee before finalizing the transaction.
By implementing these changes, Google Pay aims to streamline its payment processes and align its fee structure with competitors, maintaining its position in the digital payment landscape.
