Moran Community’s Passionate Stand: Demand for PRC Fuels Boycott of Arunachal Statehood Day
The All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU) and Lekang Circle residents have declared a boycott of the 39th Arunachal Pradesh Statehood Day in protest of the state’s failure to grant Permanent Resident Certificates (PRC) to the Moran community. This move signals increasing frustration over the lack of official recognition of residency rights, despite the Moran tribe’s deep-rooted presence in the area long before Arunachal Pradesh’s statehood on February 20, 1987.
The protest has led to a shutdown in Mahadevpur Town, Mahadevpur Chariali, and Dirak Gate, underscoring the demand for PRC, which would grant the community rights and privileges enjoyed by other residents in the state. AMSU leaders highlighted the historical and cultural roots of the Morans in Lekang, criticizing the ongoing exclusion from fundamental rights due to the absence of PRC.
As part of their agitation, AMSU organized a peaceful demonstration and a full market shutdown in the affected areas until 4:00 PM on February 20, pressing the government to recognize the Moran’s historical presence and accord permanent resident status promptly.
“We have been residing here since before Arunachal Pradesh became a state, yet we are denied the basic right of permanent residency. This ongoing neglect has created a sense of alienation and injustice,” stated an AMSU representative. The PRC issue for Non-Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribes, including the Morans, remains a contentious topic in the state.
While the state government has not yet issued an official statement, AMSU has pledged to continue the protest until their demands are addressed. The union has rallied support from Lekang residents and supportive communities, emphasizing that their grievance is not against Statehood Day celebrations, but about being denied fundamental rights. As celebrations proceed statewide, the boycott in Lekang sends a potent message about the unresolved grievances of the Moran community and whether this demonstration will lead to policy changes remains uncertain.
