Mizoram Budget Session Kicks Off: Governor’s Inspiring Focus on Agriculture, Sports & Conservation
Aizawl, Feb 19: The Mizoram Legislative Assembly commenced its 30-day Budget Session with Governor Vijay Kumar (VK) Singh delivering his inaugural address, spotlighting critical government initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable economic growth. Singh emphasized the government’s focus on agriculture, sports, and environmental conservation during the Budget Session 2025.
A pivotal initiative is the FOCUS project, designed to aid 55,000 households through climate-resilient farming across districts including Champhai, Mamit, Serchhip, Kolasib, Khawzawl, and Saitual. Additionally, under the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm, Mizoram has developed 1,734 hectares for cultivation in multiple districts, yielding significant outputs sold to partner companies. By 2025-26, an Oil Palm Seed Garden in Mamit District is expected to commence high-quality seed production.
In sports, the EMS Programme, part of the Mizoram Bana Kaih Scheme 2024, boasts a ₹2.5 crore investment. This Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative aims to train young athletes to compete at the Olympic level, aligning with India’s Olympic 2036 vision. Furthermore, the Mizoram Sports Conclave 2024, held in June, sought to uplift sports infrastructure and global recognition in athletics.
Environmentally, Singh applauded Mizoram’s leading forest cover of 84.53%, according to the Forest Survey of India Report 2021. The state’s conservation efforts include national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and a tiger reserve to enhance forest cover and adapt to climate changes.
Additional government efforts highlighted include:
- Agriculture: Promoting sustainable practices to boost farmer productivity.
- Infrastructure: Enhancing sports facilities and urban development, constructing thousands of toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0.
- Public Health & Education: Providing tap water to over 1,33,060 rural households and recruiting teachers to mitigate shortages.
- Employment: Launching skill training programs with industry leaders to enhance job opportunities via the Mizoram Youth Commission.
These initiatives underscore Mizoram’s commitment to balanced growth across critical sectors.
