Disheartening Failure: Guwahati’s Ambitious Smart Streetlight Project Falls Short of Promises
Guwahati: The ambitious smart streetlight project, intended to revolutionize urban security and infrastructure, has instead become a source of considerable frustration for Guwahati residents. Despite an investment of Rs 83.96 crore and the installation of 20,657 out of the planned 20,667 streetlights, many parts of the city remain shrouded in darkness. This issue stems not only from delays in meter connections by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) but also from maintenance failures, uneven distribution, and lack of oversight.
Residents report that while major roads are illuminated, numerous inner lanes, residential areas, and key arterial roads are still without light. This has heightened safety concerns, particularly affecting pedestrians, students, and women traveling at night. Pranab Jyoti Haloi from Beltola highlights the unlit bylanes in areas like Dispur, noting a rise in crime as a result. Similarly, Bishnu Rabha from Kahilipara Road questions the financial accountability of the project, expressing frustration over persistent insecurity and inadequate illumination.
The dissatisfaction extends throughout the city, even near significant institutions like GMCH, where road conditions and lighting remain poor. Residents demand transparency and effective implementation of safety measures, urging authorities to address these issues beyond high-profile events and official visits. Overall, the smart streetlight project, rather than enhancing urban life, has left much to be desired, underscoring a need for improved oversight and accountability.
