8 Life-Saving, Fiber-Rich Foods to Shield Against Colorectal Cancer

The incidence of colorectal cancer is increasingly affecting younger individuals, posing a significant public health concern. Traditionally considered a disease prevalent among older adults, this shift has raised alarms. Although the precise causes of this trend are unclear, certain lifestyle factors may be contributing to the rise in early-onset cases. These factors include diets low in fiber, lack of physical activity, alcohol consumption, tobacco use, and obesity. A study cited in the CFP MFC journal highlights that diets high in fat and meat, but low in dietary fiber, can compromise colonic cell health. Fiber plays a crucial role in maintaining gut health by adding bulk to stool, promoting bowel regularity, and nourishing beneficial gut bacteria.

To mitigate the risk of colorectal cancer, it is advisable to incorporate fiber-rich foods into daily diets. Navy beans, recognized for their high fiber and protein content, can be used in salads, curries, or stews, offering 10.5 g of fiber per 100 g. Soybeans, versatile in dishes like tofu and miso, provide 6 g of fiber. Lentils, with 7.9 g of fiber, support digestion and fuel gut bacteria. Whole grains such as quinoa and barley are essential for digestive health, with barley containing an impressive 17.3 g of fiber per 100 g. Broccoli, rich in both fiber and sulforaphane, supports digestion and cancer prevention with 2.6 g of fiber. Apples, particularly with their skin, offer 2.4 g of fiber and aid bowel regulation. Artichokes, containing 5.4 g of fiber and prebiotic inulin, support gut bacteria growth. Walnuts, with 6.7 g per 100 g, offer fiber, healthy fats, and antioxidants that may protect against cancer.

Incorporating these foods into your diet could reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer and support overall gut health, addressing this concerning rise, particularly among young people.
