Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is advocating for the formation of a “European army” to bolster the continent’s security, as he asserts that Russia shows no intentions of engaging in dialogue to conclude the ongoing war. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, Zelenskyy emphasized that the current conflict between Ukraine and Russia demonstrates the need for such a military initiative, suggesting that the groundwork for a unified European force is already in place.
Zelenskyy expressed concerns that the United States might not support Europe in addressing certain threats, highlighting the necessity for Europe to rely on its own military capabilities. “I really believe that time has come. The armed forces of Europe must be created so that Europe’s future depends only on Europeans,” he remarked.
Additionally, Zelenskyy revealed intelligence suggesting Russia plans to deploy troops to Belarus under the guise of training exercises, posing a “direct threat” to NATO nations. He criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin’s view of Belarus as merely another extension of Russia.
Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine would need to significantly expand its military should it fail to join NATO, underscoring the crucial role of U.S. military support in Ukraine’s survival against potential Russian aggression. Despite ongoing discussions about a peace deal with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Zelenskyy insisted that Ukraine requires “security guarantees” before entertaining any peace talks with Russia.
The Ukrainian leader’s appeal for a European military unit comes amid a lack of clear U.S. military support, following former President Donald Trump’s statements indicating that American forces would not be deployed in Ukraine to counter Russian actions. With this call for a European army, Zelenskyy aims to shift the responsibility of continental defense to Europe itself.
