Despite having lived in Kochi for 12 years, Sanoj Kumar and Dimpal Devi, originally from Hurka village in Bihar’s Rohtas district, struggle with understanding Malayalam. Their son, Aryan Thakur, however, has more than compensated for this gap. An eighth-standard student born and raised in Kochi, Aryan has successfully translated a Malayalam children’s story into Hindi. The 19-page translation of “Ullitheeyalum Onpathinte Pattikayum,” a story from a collection by esteemed author Priya A.S., is set for release on July 11 at Sree Rudra Vilasam UP School in Pallimukku, Aryan’s previous school. He currently attends St. Albert’s High School.

The translation project originated in February during a ‘Budding Writers’ program at Sree Rudra Vilasam UP School. Given Aryan’s exceptional proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking Malayalam, the responsibility of translating the story was entrusted to him. Aryan managed to complete the translation within a month, and his work was showcased during the school’s annual day celebrations. “Recognizing the potential, we decided to publish it as a book,” said Sindu T.P., the school’s headmistress.

Jyothi Bala, Aryan’s former lower primary teacher and a Hindi expert, mentored him through the process. “About 80% of his translation was accurate, needing only minor corrections,” she noted, adding that Aryan initially hesitated due to academic commitments but later took on the challenge enthusiastically.

Aryan translated the story during late-night sessions post his studies. His dedication paid off, culminating in a book that will enable Hindi-speaking children to enjoy a Malayalam story. The school secured author Priya A.S.’s permission before publishing, and she expressed her delight at the initiative, committing to attend the release event. Aryan, now with a published translation to his name, looks forward to similar projects in the future. “I am happy that my work will help more children enjoy the story,” he shared.
