Guwahati: Assam’s Badminton Veterans Triumph at Ceylon Masters International
Veteran badminton duo from Assam, Bijoy Kumar Barman and Arup Buragohain, achieved a notable victory at the ‘Ceylon Masters International Badminton Championships 2024’ held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Representing India, they clinched the title in the Men’s 55 age group double category by defeating local Sri Lankan players Lalith Nihal Amarasena and Darshana Senarathna with scores of 19-21, 21-15, and 21-17.
Despite an initial setback in the first set, Barman and Buragohain displayed resilience and skill with power-packed smashes to secure their win in the subsequent two sets. Both athletes are members of the Assam Seniors Badminton Club, and the tournament took place from July 25 to 28.
Prior to this victory, Barman and Buragohain had represented India in the 2023 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships in South Korea. The Ceylon Masters International, featuring a prize pool of $10,000, attracted top master shuttlers worldwide, offering competitions in various age categories ranging from 35 to 75, along with combined age categories in men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles events.
The tournament adhered to BWF regulations, ensuring high standards of play and exciting matches.
