Crucial Call: SSPC Urges Assam Assembly to Champion Sustainable Development in Sixth Schedule Areas
In a significant consultation meeting held in Dispur, the Sixth Schedule Protection Committee (SSPC) engaged with Assam’s legislators to spotlight the pressing issues affecting the Sixth Schedule areas, such as Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong. Organized by the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, the meeting aimed to prepare lawmakers for discussions in the forthcoming Assembly session in Kokrajhar.
The SSPC underscored the necessity for sustainable development in these regions, labeling them the “lungs” of Assam. They advocated for environmentally friendly development projects that would benefit local communities, rather than extractive industries that degrade the environment and offer minimal economic benefits.
Key political and administrative challenges were also brought to light by the SSPC. The committee expressed concerns over the impact of Panchayati Raj programs like GPDP and CDC, suggesting these initiatives undermine the authority of Autonomous Councils. They called for enhancing the roles and powers of Members of Autonomous Councils (MACs) by providing them with dedicated local development funds and increased administrative authority.
Moreover, the SSPC urged the government to revise the 125th Constitution Amendment Bill to incorporate the input of local councils and stakeholders. They also demanded stricter enforcement of land protection laws and stronger measures against illegal activities, such as rat-hole mining and timber smuggling.
The Speaker and other legislators assured the SSPC of their commitment to scrutinize these issues in the upcoming Assembly session. However, the notable absence of MACs representatives at the meeting was acknowledged as a critical concern.
This meeting marks a pivotal step towards securing sustainable development and administrative empowerment in Assam’s Sixth Schedule areas, as legislative focus intensifies on these regions’ unique challenges and opportunities.
