Unlocking New Horizons: Tripura’s Thrilling Waterway Connection to Kolkata, Paradip, and Visakhapatnam Through Bangladesh – A Vision by Sarbananda Sonowal
The Central Government is advancing efforts to establish waterway connections linking Tripura with Kolkata, Paradip, and Visakhapatnam via Bangladesh, as disclosed by Union Shipping, Ports, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on February 12. Speaking at a press conference in Agartala, Sonowal emphasized the progress made under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, noting India’s strides toward self-reliance and economic development.
Sonowal stressed that initiatives led by PM Modi, guided by the inclusive motto ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’, aim to benefit all societal segments. He highlighted the recent budget presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as evidence of the government’s commitment to advancing the welfare of farmers, the poor, youth, women, and the middle class, while boosting the economy.
Pointing to developmental milestones in the Northeast over the past decade, Sonowal lauded Tripura’s advancement. From having only a meter gauge railway until 2014, the state now boasts broad gauge lines and around 30 express train connections alongside increased air connectivity, with approximately 24 flights serving Tripura.
He also underscored Tripura’s agricultural success stories, notably its jackfruits and pineapples reaching international markets.
Focusing on waterway infrastructure, Sonowal revealed plans to enhance global connectivity for Tripura through the installation of jetties along the Gomati River, under PM Modi’s initiative. This development not only aims to improve connections via the Bay of Bengal but also positions Tripura to capitalize on its strategic location by tapping into vast international markets.
The minister envisions these waterway connections as catalysts for economic opportunities, enabling the state to effectively leverage its potential in producing goods for global consumption. Such endeavors are expected to open doors for Tripura, strengthening its role in international trade and boosting its overall economic growth.
