New Delhi, February 12 (IANS): Newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators convened with party president JP Nadda amidst ongoing speculation about Delhi’s next Chief Minister. The BJP marked a significant victory in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, claiming 48 out of 70 seats, ending a 27-year absence from power in the capital. However, the party contested these elections without a definitive Chief Ministerial candidate, sparking conjecture on potential appointees.
Notable names circulating for the esteemed position include Parvesh Verma, who notably defeated former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and other prominent MLAs like Rekha Gupta (Shalimar Bagh), Shikha Roy (Greater Kailash), and Vijender Gupta (Rohini), among others. Historically, the BJP has been known to appoint unexpected faces to such roles, as seen in Rajasthan, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh, suggesting a similar approach could be adopted in Delhi.
During their meeting with Nadda, the MLAs expressed gratitude for his efforts during the elections, thanking him for the leadership that helped counter Arvind Kejriwal’s narratives. They emphasized their acceptance of whoever the party selects as the next Chief Minister.
On Wednesday, the BJP’s election management committee, including key figures like election in-charge Baijayant Panda and Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva, will convene to assess the party’s performance and strategize moving forward. The decision regarding the new Chief Minister will be finalized only after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his international visits to France and the United States on February 14 or 15.
The BJP leadership emphasized that the new Delhi cabinet will reflect diverse societal representation, with inclusions from Jat, Dalit, Purvanchali, Sikh, Pahari, and Baniya communities. As internal discussions continue, party leaders have refrained from publicly speculating on the Chief Ministerial selection, maintaining a unified front.
