FM Nirmala Sitharaman Disproves TMC’s Bold Claims: Unveiling Truth with Striking Statistics on Central Support to Bengal!
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed allegations from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of federal discrimination against West Bengal by highlighting key infrastructure and social welfare initiatives undertaken by the Narendra Modi government in the state. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the Union Budget debate, Sitharaman outlined major projects in highways, railways, and airports, alongside social programs like the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) and Ayushman Bharat, which she claimed were obstructed by TMC corruption.
Sitharaman accused TMC cadres of systemic corruption, citing incidents such as the embezzlement of PMAY-G funds and the creation of 25 lakh fake job cards in the MNREGA scheme. She also mentioned the Mid-Day Meal fraud worth Rs 100 crore and the activities of ration mafias, underscoring that these actions deprived grassroots beneficiaries of their rightful support. Additionally, she criticized the state’s inadequate tap water coverage, which stands at 43% compared to the national average of 74%, and highlighted the decline in capital formation and industrial output in West Bengal.
The Finance Minister pointed out the state’s past industrial prowess, which has since dwindled from a 24% industrial production share in 1947 to 3.5% in 2021. She also noted that Bengal’s per capita income growth has trailed national averages over the last two decades, placing it 23rd in 2021-22. Despite these challenges, Sitharaman emphasized the central government’s contributions, including the inauguration of AIIMS Kalyani in 2024, affirming the Centre’s commitment to the state’s development.
