Manipur Congress’ Bold Stand: MLAs Must Rightfully Elect New Leader Post-CM’s Resignation
Following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Manipur Congress Legislature Party leader Okram Ibobi Singh emphasized the need for the state’s MLAs to elect a new leader of the assembly. Ibobi Singh, who served as Chief Minister for three terms, criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the unfolding situation. Despite Biren Singh’s resignation being accepted by Governor AK Bhalla, no alternative arrangements have been made to fill the leadership vacuum, prompting warnings from experts about a potential constitutional crisis in the BJP-ruled Manipur.
Ibobi Singh expressed frustration over the central government’s handling of the situation, suggesting that the absence of a new Chief Minister could have been avoided. He argued that the legislators should have convened immediately to elect a new leader, suggesting it would not have taken more than a couple of hours. Criticism was also directed at the abrupt cancellation of the budget session of the assembly, which was scheduled to start on the Monday following the resignation. The Governor subsequently declared the budget session “null and void.”
The current circumstances have raised concerns about potential instability, with no political entity stepping forward to claim the formation of a new government. The Congress leader’s remarks underscore the urgency of resolving the leadership crisis to prevent further governmental and constitutional challenges.
