Shocking Resignation: Manipur CM Biren Singh Steps Down Dramatically Before Critical Assembly Session
Manipur’s Chief Minister Biren Singh Resigns Ahead of Assembly Session
On Sunday, a day before a pivotal Assembly session, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh submitted his resignation to Governor A.K. Bhalla. Despite his resignation, Governor Bhalla asked Singh to continue as a caretaker Chief Minister until further notice. In his resignation letter, Singh expressed his gratitude to the Central government for its initiatives and interventions that have supported Manipur’s development and stability. Singh highlighted significant priorities such as maintaining Manipur’s territorial integrity, addressing border infiltration, deporting illegal immigrants, and combating drug-related issues.
Nongthombam Biren Singh, 64, assumed office on March 15, 2017, as Manipur’s 12th Chief Minister after leading the BJP to its maiden victory in the state. He was re-elected in the 2022 Assembly elections. However, ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which erupted in May 2023, overshadowed his second term.
A senior official at the Raj Bhavan confirmed that Singh, accompanied by several ministers and party leaders, presented his resignation to the Governor. The official also mentioned that the party’s central leadership, in consultation with state leaders, is expected to announce new leadership within a few days.
Reports had suggested that Singh’s resignation came after directions from central party leaders, yet the timing still caught political and non-political circles by surprise. During the meeting with Governor Bhalla, Singh was joined by BJP’s northeast in-charge Sambit Patra, state BJP President Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, and other cabinet ministers and party leaders. The developments mark a significant political shift in Manipur as the state anticipates a leadership change.
