Iran Faces Pressure to Change Nuclear Stance Amid Rising Tensions
Top commanders of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have reportedly urged Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei to revoke his fatwa prohibiting the development of nuclear weapons. This appeal comes amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East and the potential threat of a full-scale conflict with Israel. Khamenei’s fatwa, declared in the early 2000s, labels the creation and use of nuclear weapons as ‘haram’ (sinful) and has been reiterated multiple times, including during the 2005 IAEA conference.
IRGC leaders argue that, given the existential threats from Israel and Western nations, particularly the United States, Iran must reconsider its stance on nuclear armament to protect its sovereignty. While Iranian officials assert that the nation has long possessed the capability to develop nuclear weapons, Khamenei has so far resisted internal pressures to weaponize Iran’s nuclear technology.
Despite possessing the technical know-how, the Supreme Leader’s stance has led to a halt in diplomatic engagement with the US and silenced internal proponents of nuclear weapon development. Some Iranian officials warn that this dual abstention—eschewing both diplomacy and nuclear armament—poses its own risks for Iran’s security and survival.
Kamal Kharazi, an adviser to Khamenei and former Foreign Affairs Minister, emphasized Iran’s restraint in adhering to Khamenei’s religious edict during a critical period defined by Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military targets in October 2024. However, he cautioned that Iran’s nuclear doctrine might change if the nation’s existence becomes imperiled.
As pressures mount from both internal factions and external threats, Iran’s future nuclear strategy remains uncertain, highlighting the region’s volatile geopolitical landscape.
