Honoring Heroes: Empowering Assam’s Veterans – GOI Secretary’s Inspiring Visit to Sainik Welfare Directorate
Niten Chandra, the Secretary to the Government of India for Ex-Serviceman Welfare in the Ministry of Defence, visited the Directorate of Sainik Welfare in Assam on February 8. Accompanying him was Major General SBK Singh, the Director General of Resettlement. During his visit, Chandra evaluated the welfare, financial, and infrastructure-related efforts underway at the Directorate. Brigadier Polash Choudhury, a retired Sena Medal recipient and current Director of Sainik Welfare Assam, provided a detailed briefing on the Directorate’s initiatives, including the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS).
Chandra expressed his deep satisfaction with the Directorate’s proactive approach in advancing the welfare of ex-servicemen and encouraged the continuation of their commendable efforts.
In related news, the Indian Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, recently honored two veterans, Major General Alok Raj (Retd) and Havildar Gurprem Singh (Retd), with the ‘Veterans Achievers Award’ during a visit to Jaipur Military Station. General Dwivedi took the opportunity to interact with numerous veterans, urging them to continue their contributions towards nation-building and to embrace the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047.’
Additionally, last week, General Dwivedi recognized Indian Army contingents and bands for their exceptional performances during the Republic Day 2025 celebrations and the Beating Retreat Ceremony. The Army released a statement highlighting the pride in honoring its personnel’s achievements during these national events.
This sequence of visits by top officials underscores the Indian government and military’s ongoing commitment to acknowledging the contributions of ex-servicemen and furthering their welfare, while also celebrating active duty personnel’s role in significant national ceremonies.
