Elon Musk Shocks the World: His Unwavering Stance on TikTok Acquisition | Breaking Technology News
Elon Musk has dismissed rumors about his interest in acquiring TikTok, the popular short video app at the center of US-China tensions. During a summit organized by The WELT Group, part of Axel Springer SE, Musk, who leads President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), clarified his stance. Amid rising uncertainty over TikTok’s US operations, Trump had suggested Musk as a potential buyer for the app’s American assets to alleviate security concerns. However, Musk stated, “I have not put in a bid for TikTok,” noting his unfamiliarity with the app and lack of interest in social media acquisitions.
Musk reflected on his unique acquisition of X, formerly known as Twitter, calling it an anomaly in his business strategy. “I’m not chomping at the bit to acquire TikTok,” he remarked, highlighting that acquiring companies is not his usual approach, as reported by Reuters.
TikTok, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, has been under scrutiny from US lawmakers due to data privacy concerns, sparking debates over potential bans. The Trump administration initially mandated ByteDance to sell its US assets by January to avoid a ban, citing fears that the Chinese government might demand access to American user data. However, after his inauguration on January 20, Trump signed an executive order delaying the enforcement of this ban, allowing TikTok some reprieve as it continues operations with its American user base, now approximately 170 million strong.
The issue signifies the broader geopolitical and technological tensions between the US and China, with TikTok merely one of many digital battlegrounds. Musk’s remarks, therefore, underscore an ongoing narrative of balancing innovation interests with national security concerns in the digital age.
