Delhi Shocker: BJP Triumphs After 27 Years, AAP Ousted & Congress Crushed!
In a dramatic political shift, the BJP ended its 27-year absence from power in Delhi’s national capital by securing a landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections. The party captured 48 out of 70 seats, displacing the ruling AAP, which managed to retain only 22 seats—a significant drop from its previous tallies of 67 and 62 in 2015 and 2020, respectively. Prominent AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, faced defeat, with the majority of their retained seats being from reserved or Muslim-majority constituencies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his victory address, expressed gratitude towards Delhiites for “liberating” the city from a decade-long “calamity,” referring to AAP’s rule. He vowed to transform Delhi into a modern city, tackling issues like pollution and poor infrastructure, while pledging to address corruption by presenting pending CAG reports.
In contrast, AAP leader Kejriwal gracefully accepted the electoral outcome, extending congratulations to the BJP and emphasizing his party’s ongoing commitment to societal service and constructive opposition. Despite efforts in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, AAP’s vote share dropped from 53.5% in 2020 to 43.5% this election, while BJP’s climbed to 45.6% from 38.5%.
Congress, once again, failed to win any seats but saw a slight increase in vote share. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi reiterated his party’s resolve to persist in advocating for Delhi’s progress and fighting issues like pollution, inflation, and corruption.
The BJP’s campaign leveraged the “double engine government” narrative, highlighting enhanced governance potential with the central government holding jurisdiction over key areas through the Lt Governor. Under current Lt Governor V K Saxena, AAP faced increased scrutiny, notably regarding its excise policy and Kejriwal’s official residence renovation, escalating the long-standing tensions between the Delhi government and the Lt Governor’s office.
