The Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court has dismissed a petition filed by the All Mizoram Village Council Association (AMVCA) against the Mizoram government’s decision to reduce the tenure of Village Councils (VCs) by six months. The court’s decision, delivered by Justice Nelson Sailo, supports the government’s move to end the VC term on February 19, following a notification in November last year that cut the term by six months.
AMVCA President K Lalngaizuala, along with another leader, had challenged this decision, arguing that the government did not provide a specific reason for the term reduction, which they claimed infringed on their rights. However, the court found the petition lacked merit, asserting there was no legitimate grievance presented by the association. Consequently, the writ petition was dismissed without the need for further discussion of the authorities cited by the petitioners.
As part of the state’s electoral process, elections for 544 village councils across nine districts—excluding the three autonomous district councils in Siaha and Lawngtlai districts—and 111 local councils within the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC), are slated for February 12.
According to officials, 6,829 candidates will contest in the village council elections, while 2,076 candidates will vie for positions in the local councils. The counting of votes will commence on the evening of February 12, once polling concludes.
This development underscores the legal affirmation of the Mizoram government’s decision and the upcoming electoral activities pivotal to the state’s local governance structure.
