Epic Poll Journey: Discovering the Heart of Delhi from Narela to Karawal Nagar
As Delhi’s electorate headed to the polls on Wednesday, The Indian Express canvassed the city from Narela to Karawal Nagar to gauge voter sentiment. Residents expressed their voting priorities as better roads, clean water, pollution remedies, garbage-free streets, and a compassionate government. In the capital’s heart, where 1.09 lakh voters are involved in a heated contest, candidates include former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit, and BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh. Near Sanchar Bhawan, an early voter, Desraj, anticipated a close election, reflecting widespread desire for change and development.
Issues like pollution and public transport were pivotal for first-time voter Akshat in Laxmi Bai Nagar, while Greater Kailash saw agents ensuring EVMs were ready. In Shalimar Bagh, low-income voters shared hopes for better roads and traffic management, whereas affluent Model Town residents rejected freebie politics, calling for infrastructure improvements.
Contrasting areas like Rithala and Rohini exposed disparities in living conditions, impacting voter concerns from sewage to inflation and electricity bills. In West Delhi’s Khyala, inflation and power cuts dominated discussions, while historical contexts influenced voter sentiments in areas like the Widow Colony and Madipur.
Northeast Delhi constituencies reflected diverse priorities; sectarian undercurrents were evident in Mustafabad, with voters split over party allegiances. In Kalkaji, voters praised local governance, while others voiced frustrations over polling inefficiencies. Across East Delhi, the call for change resonated amidst concerns about inadequate infrastructure and services.
The overall voter sentiment was a blend of current satisfaction and a yearning for improvement, reflecting Delhi’s complex political landscape as residents awaited the election outcomes.
