Nagaland embarked on a significant conservation initiative on February 5, launching the ‘Watershed Yatra’ at the Directorate of Land Resources in Kohima. The event featured a ‘Land and Water Conservation Pledge’ led by Nagaland Land Resources Advisor, G. Ikuto Zhimomi, emphasizing commitments to preserve land and water in agricultural and village areas. Attendees pledged support for watershed structures like percolation tanks and farm ponds, aiming to tackle soil erosion through bunding and tree planting.
Addressing the gathering, Zhimomi described Watershed Yatra as a mass outreach campaign under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (WDC-PMKSY 2.0), aimed at promoting watershed development across 27 states and 2 union territories. He highlighted the ongoing efforts of Nagaland’s Land Resources Department, which has been active in watershed development since 1999. Under PMKSY-WDC 2.0, projects are currently underway across nine districts, including Kohima and Mokokchung. The initiative underscores the vital role of community participation in watershed management, which Zhimomi asserted is crucial for sustainable futures.
Marking the commencement of the Watershed Yatra was the launch of a mobile van, which preceded participation in a national virtual program, addressed by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan. Albert Ngullie, Director and CEO of the State Level Nodal Agency, pointed out that the Yatra aims to combat threats like drought and pollution, urging citizens to protect vital ecosystems.
The event, presided over by SLNA Chairman Kevekha Kevin Zehol, featured remarks from community leaders and stakeholders, including Kekhrielezo Zuyie and Ruopfuzhanuo Whiso, encouraging youth involvement in conservation. The program concluded with recognition of progressive farmers, cultural performances, and calls for watershed protection as a collective responsibility.
