Frustration and Outrage: Delhi Voters Upset Over Missing Names in 2025 Election
On Wednesday, several residents of the national capital faced disenfranchisement in the Delhi Assembly election of 2025 due to their names being removed from the voters’ list. Azhar Abbas Khan, a long-time voter in Rajouri Garden, discovered his name missing when he went to vote at Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya No 2. Khan speculated that his move within the area could have led to the oversight, despite having voted in previous elections, including the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Khan’s frustration grew as he learned at another polling station that both his and his son’s names were marked as “deleted.”
Similarly, in Mayur Vihar, Narinder Sharma was unable to vote after finding his name absent from the list. Sharma, who has been a voter since 2010, expressed his displeasure at not being notified about his removal, highlighting a communication gap from the Election Commission. Despite filing an online complaint, he was advised to re-register, while his wife’s name remained on the list.
In contrast, Deboo Singh, 74, travelled from Darbhanga, Bihar, just to vote in Delhi. Although Singh moved out of the city three years ago, his name still appeared on the voters’ roll. Singh, a consistent voter for the BJP, made the trip to Delhi despite having no pressing electoral issues, stating his long-standing loyalty to the party.
The situation underscores issues in the voter verification process, as residents raise concerns about inadequate communication and procedural discrepancies from the Election Commission. These incidents highlight the need for streamlined voter database management to ensure voter rights are upheld.
