Large-Scale Illegal Coal Storage Uncovered in Ledo
A vast illegal coal storage operation has been discovered in Ledo, within the 83 No. Margherita constituency. L Ratan Singh, General Secretary of the International Human Rights Council’s Tinsukia District Committee, expressed dissatisfaction and alleged that such operations cannot occur without support from the Assam Government and Assam Police.
During a recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh, committee members observed unauthorized pathways on railway land between Itakhola and Tirap Colliery being used for illegal coal storage. Investigations revealed that this coal originated from banned rat-hole mines in Deep Mine and No. 1 Mulung Hill. The operation is reportedly led by individuals identified as Das and Rajak, who transport coal using trucks during the night.
The land in question belongs to Indian Railways, and despite recent arrests by the Railway Police, illegal activities persist in the area. The Tinsukia District Committee has called on the Railway Police, Margherita Police, Margherita Co-District administration, NEC CIL Margherita, and forest officials to act swiftly against these illegal practices. They have also warned of potential legal action, including approaching the Guwahati High Court if authorities fail to intervene effectively.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns about illegal coal mining and the need for robust enforcement to curb such activities.
