Record-Smashing Triumph: Four National Weightlifting Records Shattered!
DEHRADUN, Feb 3: Punjab’s weightlifting sensation Mehak Sharma delivered a record-breaking performance at the 38th National Games, shattering three of her own national records to clinch the gold medal in the women’s 87+ kg category. Sharma lifted 106kg in the snatch and 141kg in the clean-and-jerk, eclipsing her previous bests. Her total lift of 247kg not only set a new national record but also secured her victory by a significant margin. The silver went to Purnima Pandey from Uttar Pradesh with 216kg, while Karnataka’s Satya Jyothi took the bronze with 201kg.
In men’s weightlifting, Tamil Nadu’s S Rudramayan broke the national snatch record in the 109+kg category, lifting 175kg. Despite his strong start, Rudramayan settled for silver with a total of 355kg after struggling in the clean and jerk. Lovepreet Singh of Services claimed gold with a combined 367kg, while Uttarakhand’s Vivek Pandey earned bronze with 280kg.
Meanwhile, the swimming events witnessed an intense rivalry between Karnataka’s Srihari Nataraj and Dhinidhi Desinghu, both winning their seventh gold medals of the Games. Desinghu, only 14, set a new Games record in the women’s 400m freestyle and also contributed to a gold in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay. Her medal tally reached nine, including five earlier golds and a silver and bronze.
Nataraj, a 24-year-old Paris Olympian, triumphed in the men’s 50m backstroke, bringing his total haul at the Games to eight medals. The duo are now frontrunners for the titles of best male and female athletes of the National Games, marking an emphatic presence in the swimming arena. (PTI)
