Discover the Flourishing Muslim Nation Hosting 26 Lakh Indian Workers: Unveiling Its Vision for a Prosperous Future
In recent years, Saudi Arabia has become a thriving hub for Indian workers, with their numbers in the country surpassing 2.65 million (26.5 lakh) during the 2023-24 period. This significant presence is a testament to the robust ties between India and Saudi Arabia, and the increasing demand for Indian professionals in the kingdom. Indians are now pivotal contributors to the construction of Saudi Arabia’s iconic skyscrapers and are actively participating in diverse sectors such as high-tech, infrastructure, telecom, healthcare, and green energy.
Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 aims to diversify the economy away from its dependency on oil, which has led to a surge in demand for skilled labor across various industries. To meet this demand, Saudi Arabia’s Takamol Holding, in collaboration with India’s National Skill Development Corporation, has initiated training programs covering 65 professional skills, easing job acquisition for Indian workers.
The presence of Indian companies in Saudi Arabia has also grown exponentially, with nearly 3,000 companies now operating there, compared to just 400 in 2019. These companies have invested billions in sectors like construction, pharmaceuticals, financial services, and telecom, marking a shift from being seen predominantly as labor providers to becoming recognized technology and innovation leaders.
Moreover, the Saudi government has introduced reforms to protect Indian workers’ rights, including the launch of the Qiwa digital platform for transparent employee contract management. Trade between India and Saudi Arabia has reached new heights, with bilateral trade amounting to $43.3 billion in 2023-24. Key exports from India include $1 billion worth of rice, while India imports significant quantities of crude oil and fertilizers from Saudi Arabia.
The Indian community in Saudi Arabia is evolving from labor to include roles as engineers, doctors, and business partners, with their numbers poised to grow in the coming years, further cementing the strong bilateral relationship.
