Urgent Call: CM Biren Singh Demands Crucial Dialogue on Manipur’s Ethnic Crisis
Imphal, Feb 3: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has called for a comprehensive dialogue on the state’s current ethnic situation, urging participation from academics and students to unearth core issues. Addressing a gathering at Manipur University, where he inaugurated the new Art and Culture building and an Open Gym, Singh emphasized the need for educational institutions to help dispel public confusion regarding ethnic conflicts.
He suggested organizing seminars or legal workshops to enhance public awareness, particularly on matters like border fencing. Singh highlighted the recent publication of “Know Manipur,” which aims to educate residents about the state’s history and their shared heritage. He stressed that societal progress relies on individuals acting with a sense of belonging and ownership.
Additionally, Singh underscored the role of educational institutions as pillars of social development, noting that university graduates significantly influence society’s trajectory. He laid the foundation stones for a 33/11 KVA electric sub-station and a swimming pool on the university campus, reaffirming the government’s commitment to educational progress.
Recalling a May 2023 incident of ethnic violence during a previous university event, Singh expressed hopes for peace in the state. He called for disturbance-free educational environments to foster growth and learning.
Manipur University Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra Singh praised state and central government support, which facilitated the university’s growth from a JNU PG Centre to a Central University with 44 departments and 119 affiliated colleges, serving around 6,900 students in the university and 68,000 in affiliated colleges.
This initiative highlights the pressing need for cohesive dialogue and educational empowerment to address ethnic tensions and foster societal growth in Manipur.
