Revolutionary Weight Loss & Anti-Diabetes Drug from Eli Lilly: Is It Safe for India’s Consumers? Discover the Truth!
Eli Lilly, a US pharmaceutical company, is preparing to introduce its anti-diabetes and weight loss drug, Mounjaro, in India by 2025, pending regulatory approvals. The drug, known as Tirzepetide, is administered as a weekly injection aimed at managing obesity and diabetes, both of which are significant health concerns. While the pricing for Tirzepetide in India remains undecided, Eli Lilly emphasizes that the drug’s cost will consider its effectiveness in enhancing health and mitigating the economic strains of these conditions.
Rachel Batterham, Eli Lilly’s senior vice president of international medical affairs, highlighted the drug’s global success in improving health and tackling obesity-related issues. However, she addressed that there are safety considerations, as Mounjaro has been associated with side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. More serious but rare risks include thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, and gallbladder disease.
Certain individuals, including pregnant women and those with specific medical conditions, are advised against using Tirzepetide. Batterham stressed the importance of viewing obesity not as a cosmetic issue but a disease capable of reducing life expectancy, necessitating treatment akin to other chronic diseases.
The discussion on obesity’s impact resonates with recent comments from India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who underscored the need for physical activity and a balanced diet to combat obesity and related conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. This aligns with Eli Lilly’s mission of addressing obesity and its associated health problems, which remain a growing concern in India.
