Charaideo’s Bold Move: Empowering Schools with Tobacco-Free Zones – A Victory for Guwahati’s Future!
In an effort to safeguard student health and reduce tobacco consumption, Neha Yadav, the district magistrate and deputy commissioner of Charaideo, has enacted an immediate prohibition on the sale and consumption of tobacco products within a 100-meter radius of all educational institutions in the district. This decisive action announced on Saturday, addresses rising concerns over tobacco vendors operating near schools and colleges, potentially endangering students’ health by offering easy access to tobacco products for minors.
To enforce public awareness and adherence, municipal officials have been directed to prominently display “No Tobacco Zone” signs within the designated perimeter around educational institutions. The order, in alignment with the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) of 2003, strictly forbids the sale of cigarettes, gutka, and other tobacco-related products, as well as any smoking or tobacco consumption within these zones. COTPA also explicitly prohibits selling tobacco to individuals under 18 and sales within 100 yards of educational institutions.
Yadav emphasized that the presence of tobacco sales near educational premises poses a significant threat to public health, particularly affecting students. The directive aims to establish a protective barrier around educational spaces and ensure stringent enforcement of national regulations.
Those violating the new regulations will face penalties under existing laws, reinforcing the district’s commitment to reducing tobacco exposure among youth and protecting public health. This strategic move mirrors efforts to create a healthier environment for students and the broader community by limiting tobacco availability and usage near schools and colleges.
