Urgent Appeal: Tripura CM Fights for Justice in Employee Pay Discrepancy
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has appealed to the 16th Finance Commission for financial assistance to address salary discrepancies for state government employees, as reported on Saturday. In an interview with TOI, Saha highlighted a significant pay gap between state and central government employees despite similar job responsibilities. The Tripura administration is eager to resolve these disparities, which include 23% less Dearness Allowance (DA), 4% less house rent, and Rs 15 lakh less gratuity upon retirement for state workers. To align state employee benefits with central standards and adhere to the upcoming 8th Pay Commission’s recommendations, Tripura requires an additional few thousand crore rupees annually, including approximately Rs 500 crore each year specifically for salary adjustments. This financial request has been specially put forth to the Finance Commission.
Additionally, Saha voiced concerns over developmental challenges faced by the state, citing a steep Rs 15,000 crore loss due to severe floods the previous year. The chief minister emphasized the vital need for central government support, noting that 73% of Tripura’s land is forested, which limits the potential for establishing large-scale industries. Such geographical constraints demand extraordinary financial backing to boost socio-economic conditions in the region.
